The Whirlaway Garbage Disposal is sometimes shown as made by
Whirlaway and sometimes by Waste King. This is an example of how confusing it can be sometimes to know who
the manufacturer is of a particular disposal.
But that may not matter too much if you are careful in your selection and choose a
food waste disposal that has gotten good reviews.
First up is the 1/3 horse
Whirlaway 191 Garbage Disposal. The price I saw of just over fifty dollars for this one isn’t
bad at all. It is compact so will not require a lot of space of the kitchen sink if that is an issue with you.
It can be sued safely with right-sized septic tanks and comes with a two year warranty from the
manufacturer.
I found review which was very positive. This reviewer bought theirs as a replacement
for another Whirlaway, same model, that was twenty years old. You would think they would only be better after
20 years! The disposal was reported to come with everything needed for installation and was very easy to do
with the simple instructions.
Next up is the Whirlaway 291 model with ½ horsepower. This one is
actually the same size as the previous model discussed but with more power. And in the listing I saw only
slightly more expensive. I’m not sure why anyone would buy the 191 when they could spend just a few more
bucks and get more horsepower. It has a high speed rpm of 2600. There were many positive reviews for this
model also. See some summaries below:
- Have had it for three years and no problems. It’s better than larger disposals which
sell
for a much higher price.
- Even grinds cantaloupe rinds. Because it takes up so little room, we can store
more
cleaning supplies under the sink. Because we couldn’t do the installation
ourselves (not
our gift) we did need to hire a plumber to do the job for us. We are very
pleased and
would make this purchase again.
After seeing the prices on the these disposals and some of the reviews, I have to say
that I’m impressed. When I get ready to replace my garbage disposer, this is one I will take a closer look
at.
Below is a video I found on maintaining your disposal and it just happens to be
Whirlaway model that is used in the demonstration.
For review, the basic points include:
With simple maintainence, your disposal can run almost problem free.
These units are meant to handle grease, lard, bones and fiberous vegtables. These types
items can cause the the unit to clog up and create a mess in the sink.
Other items should be placed one at a time and you should keep the cold water running
about 15 seconds after the last item has been placed into the disposal.
Ice and citrus rinds can help keep the garbage disposal clean and free of
bacteria.
You can also use a mild garbage disposal disgreaser.
If you do get a clog, FIRST unplug the unit. Then remove the splash guard. If you see what
is clogging things up, remove it with tongs and then replace the splash guard. Plug the unit back up and push the
reset button. It should now work again as normal.
